The best apps like Rain are DailyPay if you need more than half your pay, Branch if you want a published instant fee, and Chime MyPay if your job has no program. Rain Instant Pay is an employer program that usually caps you at 50% of earned wages. Rain also keeps its instant fee off its website, so you see the price only in the app. Our guide to earned wage access explains how these programs work.

Rain at a glance
Rain gives you a free bank transfer in 1 to 3 days and charges an unpublished fee for instant delivery. You can use Rain only if your employer partners with it. These are the published terms any app like Rain has to beat.
| Rain | What Rain publishes |
|---|---|
| Who it’s for | Workers whose employer offers Rain Instant Pay |
| Needs your employer? | Yes. Rain calls it “an employer-integrated benefit.” |
| Free path | ACH transfer to your bank in 1–3 days |
| Instant fee | “A small fee,” amount not published. Rain’s EWA Agreement uses $3.99 only as an example. |
| Max | 50% of earned wages “in most cases.” Your employer can set a different share and a transaction limit. |
| How you repay | Your employer takes it out of your next paycheck as a pay stub line item |
| If pay comes up short | “No Indebtedness” clause: in general, you don’t owe Rain the difference |
| Direct deposit | Rain doesn’t change it, and you don’t need a new bank account |
| Legal matters | None found on official sources as of October 2026 |
| App rating | 4.85 on the App Store as of October 2026 |

Apps like Rain compared
Five of these apps like Rain come through an employer, and two work with any job that pays by direct deposit. We put the apps with higher caps and published fees first, since those are the two places Rain falls short.
| App | Best for | Free path | Published instant fee | Max | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DailyPay | Reaching more than half your pay | Next-business-day ACH, or instant to its card with direct deposit | $1.99–$3.99 (Program Terms), $3.49 (Our Fees page) | Up to 100% of available pay, $1,000 a day | Your full paycheck routes through DailyPay |
| Branch | A published fee and free instant pay | Instant to Branch Wallet, or ACH in 3–5 business days | $2.99–$4.99 to a debit card (W-2) | 50% of projected earned wages, $1,000 per pay period | $500 per request, wallet fees |
| ZayZoon | A hard fee ceiling | ZayZoon Visa Card or gift cards | Up to $5 | $200 per payout in a 2024 help article | No published share of pay |
| Tapcheck | The highest percentage cap | Gift cards through Prizeout | Not published | 70% of net pay | Cash always costs a fee |
| Payactiv | Paychex, Paylocity, and Paycor workers | ACH in 1–3 business days, or its card with $200+ direct deposit | $2.49 to its card, $3.49 elsewhere | Up to 50% and $500 a pay period in most cases | Same 50% share as Rain |
| Chime MyPay | No employer program | Advance within 24 hours | 3% ($2 minimum, $5 maximum) | Up to $750 advertised, limits $20–$1,000 | A line of credit that needs your deposit at Chime |
| EarnIn | No employer program, keep your bank | Standard transfer in 1–2 business days | From $3.99, tips optional | $200 a day, $1,000 per pay period | A bank debit on payday plus two AG lawsuits |

What Rain’s instant fee costs
Rain doesn’t publish its instant fee. The only number on record is the $3.99 example in Rain’s own EWA Agreement. Rain’s agreement, effective November 12, 2025, says that to receive $100.00 with a $3.99 fee, your full earned wage payment would be $103.99. Rain takes the fee from the payment. Rain also says it may lower or waive the fee when you use a payment method it designates.
If your fee matched that example, a $100 advance repaid 10 days later works out to about 146% APR. Below, we compare Rain’s example with its competitors’ published fees on the same $100. We also show a year at the CFPB’s average of 27 advances. The CFPB’s July 2024 Data Spotlight found that the average worker took 27 employer EWA advances a year.
| Option | Fee on a $100 advance | APR over 10 days | 27 advances a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rain ACH, or any free path below | $0 | 0% | $0 |
| Rain instant, using its agreement’s example | $3.99 | 145.6% | $107.73 |
| Payactiv to its card without direct deposit | $2.49 | 90.9% | $67.23 |
| Branch to a debit card, low end | $2.99 | 109.1% | $80.73 |
| Chime MyPay instant (3%) | $3.00 | 109.5% | $81.00 |
| DailyPay instant, Our Fees page | $3.49 | 127.4% | $94.23 |
| Branch to a debit card, high end | $4.99 | 182.1% | $134.73 |
| ZayZoon near-instant, maximum | $5.00 | 182.5% | $135.00 |
The cheapest choice in every row is the free one. Rain’s own ACH costs nothing and lands in 1 to 3 days, which beats paying any of these fees. If you pay for speed every pay period, you have a budget gap, not a timing gap. Our beginner’s guide to budgeting and our breakdown of earned wage access fees show where the money goes.
Employer apps like Rain
The closest apps like Rain are other employer programs, and you get whichever one your employer signs with. Like Rain, each caps you at wages you’ve earned and collects through payroll. If Rain’s 50% cap or its unpublished fee is your problem, start with the first two.
DailyPay: best for reaching more than half your pay
DailyPay lets you reach up to 100% of your available balance, double Rain’s usual 50%. DailyPay’s FAQ caps transfers at $1,000 a day, or $1,500 a day to the DailyPay Card, with up to five transfers a day. DailyPay figures your available pay after taxes, deductions, and your employer’s settings.
DailyPay also publishes its fee, though in two places that disagree. DailyPay lists $1.99 to $3.99 for instant transfers in its Program Terms and $3.49 on its Our Fees page. Next-business-day transfers cost $0, and so do instant transfers to a DailyPay Card that receives your direct deposit.
The trade-off is your paycheck. Rain leaves your direct deposit alone. DailyPay routes your full net pay through DailyPay after your first transfer and sends the remainder on payday. New York’s attorney general sued DailyPay in April 2025, and we found no ruling as of October 2026. See our DailyPay review.
Branch: best for a published fee and free instant pay
Branch publishes its instant fee, which Rain doesn’t. Branch charges W-2 workers $2.99 to $4.99 to send an advance to another debit card, based on the amount. Contractors on 1099 accounts pay 2%, with a $2.99 minimum. Branch also gives you a free instant option Rain lacks: transfers to the Branch Wallet cost $0.
Branch uses the same 50% share as Rain, measured against projected earned wages. Branch adds hard limits of $1,000 per pay period and $500 per request. A free ACH to an outside bank takes 3 to 5 business days, slower than Rain’s 1 to 3.
The wallet has its own fees. Branch gives you 8 free in-network ATM withdrawals a month, then charges $2.00 each. Branch can also charge up to $5.00 a month on an account dormant past month 12. Our apps like Branch guide covers who should skip it.
ZayZoon: best for a hard fee ceiling
ZayZoon puts a maximum on its instant fee in writing. You know the worst case before you tap. ZayZoon’s USA terms, effective May 15, 2026, say a near-instant transfer, including to Venmo or Zelle, “will not exceed $5.” Connecticut workers pay $4, one per pay period. Transfers to the ZayZoon Visa Card and gift cards cost $0.
ZayZoon’s terms also rule out subscription, membership, enrollment, maintenance, inactivity, and cancellation fees, and ZayZoon pays out on a nonrecourse basis. ZayZoon doesn’t publish what share of your pay you can reach, so it may not fix Rain’s 50% limit. Its $5 ceiling also sits above Rain’s $3.99 example. Pick ZayZoon for predictability, and use the free card to keep the cost at $0.
Tapcheck: best for the highest percentage cap
Tapcheck lets you reach up to 70% of net earnings after taxes and deductions. No other employer app here publishes a higher percentage. Tapcheck’s employee page says you don’t change your direct deposit, similar to Rain. Tapcheck deducts what you took from your next paycheck as a line item. Tapcheck says available wages are typically $100 a day.
Tapcheck shares Rain’s other weakness. Tapcheck charges “one flat ATM-like fee” for cash, with a lower fee for next-day delivery, and doesn’t publish either amount. The only free path is a gift card through Prizeout, which adds up to 20% in value. If you need cash for rent, Rain’s free ACH beats anything Tapcheck offers.
Payactiv: best for Paychex, Paylocity, and Paycor workers
Payactiv runs on-demand pay inside Paychex, Paylocity, and Paycor, plus UKG Wallet and OnShift Wallet. So if you leave a Rain employer for a company on one of those systems, Payactiv is likely your new program. Payactiv publishes a full fee table on its pricing page. The ACH in 1 to 3 business days is free. Real-time transfers to the Payactiv Visa Card cost $0 with at least $200 in direct deposit per pay period and $2.49 without it. Other cards, Venmo, PayPal, and Walmart Cash Pickup cost $3.49.
Payactiv won’t fix Rain’s cap. Payactiv’s get-started FAQ says that in most cases you can reach up to 50% and $500 a pay period. Payactiv promises “never any tips.” Our Payactiv review covers the card fees.
Rain alternatives without an employer program
If your job doesn’t offer Rain or anything like it, a direct-to-consumer cash advance app is the fallback. These companies estimate your income from bank deposits and collect from your checking account on payday. Rain says it offers access with “no debt or interest traps.” These apps cost more and add a risk Rain doesn’t carry: a payday debit can overdraw your account if your paycheck lands late.
Chime MyPay: best for a published fee with no employer
Chime publishes its full MyPay price. If you’re tired of guessing at Rain’s fee, MyPay is the clearest swap. Chime’s MyPay page says an advance that arrives within 24 hours is free. Instant delivery costs 3% of the advance, with a $2 minimum and a $5 maximum. Chime charges no subscription, runs no credit check, and doesn’t report MyPay to the credit bureaus.
To qualify, you need $200 or more in qualifying direct deposits into Chime and an activated Chime card. Chime calls MyPay “a line of credit” with limits based on estimated income and risk. Chime advertises up to $750, and its footnote lists limits of $20 to $1,000 per pay period. Rain caps you at wages your employer’s payroll shows. Chime sets a credit limit instead.
EarnIn: best for keeping your current bank
You can use EarnIn with the checking account you already have. EarnIn’s Cash Out page lists up to $200 a day and $1,000 per pay period. EarnIn limits New York to $100 a day and Maryland to $150. Standard transfers are free in 1 to 2 business days, and Lightning Speed starts at $3.99.
EarnIn verifies your work through a work email, GPS location, or timesheets, and it doesn’t check your credit. EarnIn also asks for tips. Rain doesn’t, and you shouldn’t tip either, since a tip is a fee with friendlier wording. Colorado’s attorney general sued EarnIn in August 2026, and D.C.’s attorney general sued in November 2024. Our EarnIn review lists fees by state.
What replaces Rain’s Balance Protection
None of Rain’s competitors on this list publishes an automatic feature like Balance Protection. A small cash buffer is the closest substitute. With Balance Protection turned on, Rain moves earned wages into your checking account when the balance drops below $100. Rain also offers Cover Me, an AI feature Rain says helps employees avoid overdraft fees. Rain’s financial wellness products round it out: low-balance alerts, free tax filing, financial coaching, and automated savings tools.
Rain doesn’t say on the pages we read whether a Balance Protection transfer carries the instant fee. Check the app, or ask Rain’s user care team at [email protected], before you turn it on. And think about what it does to next week. Every automatic advance shrinks your next paycheck. A starter emergency fund of a few hundred dollars protects your balance without borrowing from payday. If an overdraft fee already hit, our guide to getting overdraft fees refunded can help you get it back.
Rain alternatives for employers
Employers comparing Rain should match integrations first, because Rain’s strength is its payroll connectors. Rain lists pre-built connectors to more than 100 platforms, a native Workday build, and Microsoft Teams, Paylocity, SAP SuccessFactors, ADP, and UKG Pro Workforce Management. Rain says it funds all transfers and guarantees positive take-home pay on payday, and employers reimburse Rain after payroll. Rain doesn’t publish an employer price.
- DailyPay connects to more than 180 HCM, payroll, and time systems, and Workday named DailyPay its strategic on-demand pay partner in August 2025.
- Tapcheck advertises “$0 Employer Cost” and more than 300 payroll and timekeeping integrations.
- Branch says employers need “no pre-funding, no escrow.”
- ZayZoon sells through more than 300 payroll partners and suits small businesses.
Ask every provider to put the worker’s instant fee in writing. Rain won’t publish it, so your employees deserve the number from HR. Our roundup of the best earned wage access providers compares costs, integrations, and state licenses.
How to choose between apps like Rain
Choose by the Rain limit that gets in your way. Each alternative fixes a different one:
- Half your pay isn’t enough: DailyPay goes up to 100% of available pay, and Tapcheck publishes 70% of net pay. A bigger advance means a smaller payday, so take only what the bill needs.
- You want to see the fee first: Branch, DailyPay, ZayZoon, Payactiv, and Chime all publish theirs.
- You want free and fast: Branch’s wallet transfer costs $0, and so does DailyPay’s card transfer with direct deposit.
- You liked keeping your bank: Tapcheck and EarnIn leave your current account in place.
- Your new job has no program: Chime MyPay if you’ll move your deposit, EarnIn if you won’t.
Whatever you pick, check the deduction on your next pay stub. Our explainer on the earned wage access deduction shows how to read it, and our tracker of earned wage access laws covers your state’s rules.
How we picked these Rain alternatives
We compared each company’s own fee pages, terms, and help center articles, plus regulator filings. We read them between October 22 and October 24, 2026. We didn’t test any app with our own money, and no company paid for placement. We ranked apps with a higher cap or a published fee first. Then we weighed free paths, payroll deduction over bank debit, no tips or required subscription, and legal history.
We left out Stream and Immediate, which share Rain’s habit of keeping the instant fee off their sites. We also left out Clair, because a bank now originates Clair’s advances with underwriting. And we skipped subscription apps like Brigit and Tilt, which charge you in months you don’t borrow.
When none of these apps like Rain fit
If nothing here fits, ask your employer for a payroll advance or an off-cycle check. Then call the company you owe and ask for a later due date before the bill goes late. Our guide on how to get money in a hurry lists more options.
Skip payday loans. The CFPB says a fee of $15 per $100 borrowed is common, which equals almost 400% APR on a two-week loan. Our comparison of earned wage access vs payday loans runs the numbers.
Apps like Rain FAQ
Keep Rain’s free transfer, or trade up for a clearer fee
Rain’s free 1-to-3-day ACH is already one of the better deals in earned wage access. Switch only for a reason. DailyPay and Tapcheck fit workers who need more than half a paycheck. Branch, ZayZoon, and Payactiv fit workers who want to see the fee before they pay it. With no employer program, Chime MyPay and EarnIn’s free standard transfer cost nothing.
