Dennis Langlais began his career as a pro BMX cyclist, and the Great Recession made him quickly learn how to turn those skills into a business.

PPP074: From Pro Sports Pro Branding to Dennis Langlais

Dennis Langlais started his career as a pro BMX cyclist. After a great run as a profession athlete, Dennis has his sights set on building a sustainable business leveraging his knowledge of events and marketing from his BMX days. Learn how he looked to his past skills and experience to find a path to a self-employed future in this week’s episode.

What We’re Chatting About This Week

Like many kids, Dennis Langlais wanted to be a professional baseball player. Unlike most of us, he did become a professional athlete, just not on the path he first expected. After running into local BMX culture, Dennis built up his skills and hit the road as a touring BMX cyclist. Sponsored by big brands, he traveled the world and had incredible experiences at an age most of us were sitting in high school classrooms.

Dennis found that building an audience as an online entrepreneur is not the same as when you are in magazines and TV shows, but as a podcaster Dennis understands you have to build a “celebrity” persona around yourself. As an athlete, much of this happens around you and for you, but capturing that and taking it with you in the future is not easy. Between fostering your brand and focusing on your craft and paycheck, balancing competing demands is not something many athletes or performers do well.

Sponsorships for the BMX circuit dried up in the Great Recession, and Dennis started the transition to the next phase of his career. He started working at special events, taking small appearances, and doing school assemblies. Now, instead of competing, he would show off his BMX skills at corporate and education events where they would get paid for their entertainment value.

Marketing is also a heck of a lot different today. With digital cameras and microphones we can create high quality shows at a fraction of the cost of multimedia predecessors. And if you can build an audience, you can build a business. That is the world of online marketing today.
